Real Japanese Samurai and Ninja To Take Over Nairobi As Otamatsuri 2026 Brings Japan’s Pop Culture To Life

Nairobi is set to experience a taste of Japan this weekend as Otamatsuri 2026, Kenya’s annual anime, manga and multi-entertainment convention, brings a Japanese samurai and ninja performance troupe, KATANAYA ICHI, to the city for a full day celebrating anime, gaming, Japanese and Korean pop culture.

The event, organised by Movie Jabber, will take place on Saturday, 22 August 2026 at The Carnivore Grounds, bringing together thousands of fans for an immersive celebration featuring Japanese and Korean pop culture, cosplay, gaming, music, food, technology, merchandise and live performances. The main event will run from 10.00am to 7.00pm, followed by an overnight LAN gaming party running into Sunday morning.

The headline attraction will be a visiting Japanese samurai and ninja performance troupe, bringing the spectacle, movement and theatrical traditions of Japan’s warrior culture to a Nairobi audience through live performances.

For anime and Japanese culture enthusiasts, the experience will extend beyond the stage. Attendees will have the opportunity to come dressed as their favorite characters, participate in cosplay activities, watch gaming competitions, explore food and merchandise vendors, experience K-pop and enjoy live musical performances and interactive activities throughout the day.

Otamatsuri will also feature panels and community experiences designed to bring fans together around the entertainment and cultures they love, while creating a space where anime, gaming, music, technology and creativity intersect.

Jotham Micah, Managing Director of Movie Jabber, said Otamatsuri has evolved beyond being an event for anime enthusiasts to become a broader celebration of global pop culture and the communities that have grown around it.

This year, we wanted to make that experience even more immersive, and having a professional Japanese samurai and ninja troupe perform live in Nairobi is a major part of that. You can watch anime, play games or follow Japanese pop culture online, but there is something completely different about standing in front of a live Japanese performance and experiencing it with thousands of other fans.”

The 2026 edition is expected to attract more than 5,000 attendees, with the event offering activities for both dedicated fans and people discovering anime and Japanese pop culture for the first time.

Beyond the daytime programme, gaming enthusiasts will have the opportunity to compete in an overnight LAN party, extending the Otamatsuri experience until Sunday morning.

The event will also feature vendors selling anime merchandise, food and technology products, creating a marketplace around the growing fandom economy.

Otamatsuri’s growth reflects the increasing commercial and cultural influence of fandom communities in Kenya. Vendor sales at previous editions have grown substantially over the years, with the organisers reporting vendor sales of more than KSh 4.6 million in 2025, demonstrating the purchasing power and commercial potential of the audience.

With cosplay, gaming, Japanese performances, K-pop, music, food, technology and fan communities coming together in one location, Otamatsuri 2026 is positioning itself as more than an anime convention. It is a celebration of the increasingly diverse ways in which African audiences are consuming, experiencing and participating in global pop culture.
