The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), in collaboration with the Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund (SASDF), has officially launched Phase III of the Creatives in Arts and Film Literacy (CAFIL) Programme.

The initiative aims to empower creatives in arts and film to produce content that upholds Kenya’s cultural values while protecting children from exposure to inappropriate audio-visual material.

Speaking during the launch event at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi on Monday, December 9, 2024, KFCB Acting CEO, Mr. Paskal Opiyo, announced that Phase III of the program will be implemented in Nairobi, Machakos, Kirinyaga, and Kakamega counties.

He emphasized the program’s alignment with the Fifth Pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and Kenya’s Vision 2030, which recognizes creative arts as a key driver of youth empowerment and economic growth.

“This program, already rolled out in Kisumu, Nakuru, Embu, and Mombasa, is designed to equip creatives with the tools to create meaningful content, promote responsible use of ICTs, and monetize their artistic works on digital platforms,” Mr. Opiyo stated.

The CAFIL Programme offers a multifaceted approach to strengthening Kenya’s creative economy.

It includes initiatives to:Empower digital content creators to monetize their works.Raise awareness about the effects of media content and emerging technologies.Sensitize young creatives on responsible ICT usage.

Provide networking opportunities for creatives and industry stakeholders.Additionally, the program engages law enforcement officers to enhance their understanding of the Films and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222, which guides content regulation in Kenya.

Mr. Opiyo reiterated KFCB’s dedication to nurturing youth talent and supporting the creative arts as part of the broader effort to build a vibrant Orange Economy.

Through the CAFIL Programme, KFCB aims to bridge the gap between policy and practice by creating an enabling environment for content creators to thrive and contribute to Kenya’s socio-economic development.

As the third phase takes off, the CAFIL Programme continues to position itself as a vital platform for empowering creatives, promoting cultural heritage, and fostering innovation in Kenya’s arts and film sectors.
