The National Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) is a product of the Kenya Constitution 2010 that was established to support the Government’s commitment to putting in place measures to redress past disadvantages among certain segments of the population.

The mandate of the fund is to target various segments including women’s economic empowerment, Capacity Development, bursaries and scholarships, and engaging in countrywide projects that have an impact on the community.

NGAAF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Roy Sasaka Telewa spoke to Opera News on the success stories of the fund since its inception.

He noted that among the key success stories of the fund include increasing the number of children that access education in vulnerable communities by offering bursaries and scholarships.

This year alone the fund has supported 25000 students through these bursaries.

The CEO says NGAAF engages the communities through a participatory approach to avoid any loopholes which ensures accountability and that there are no gaps for this fund to be mismanaged.

The fund has over the years had many success stories from county to county.

The CEO gives an example of Kakamega County where the fund has sunk over 60 boreholes and and empowered a women’s Sacco group that started with little funds and has now grown into a microfinance with assets worth over 20 million Kenyan shillings.

The fund has built 10 safe houses across the country in 10 counties. The safe houses are a safe space for women and girls who undergo gender-based violence to get counselling and shelter.

The fund has also established over 20 police help care desk ‘policare’ and trained police officers who will be able to give first-hand solutions and address victims of GBV.

The CEO further pointed out that the fund has been involved in the community and has been paying NHIF to the most vulnerable to ensure that they can access healthcare.

“NGAAF works with all the 47 counties to ensure that the impact of the fund is felt in every part of the country”
