TECNO Wins Two IFA Innovation Awards: What the Recognition Means for Kenyan Buyers

TECNO’s modular smartphone and Tonino Lamborghini gaming PC take top innovation honours at IFA 2026, offering a glimpse into the technologies that could shape future devices in Kenya.

TECNO has taken home two IFA Global Product Technology Innovation Awards at IFA 2026, earning recognition for its experimental modular smartphone and a compact gaming PC developed in partnership with Tonino Lamborghini.

The TECNO Modular Phone won the Ultra Slim Magnetic Modular Technology Innovation Gold Award, while the Tonino Lamborghini TECNO TAURUS (MEGA MINI G1 Pro) received the Miniaturized Gaming PC Technology Innovation Gold Award.

For Kenyan consumers, the significance goes beyond the awards themselves. The two products provide an indication of where TECNO is taking its hardware strategy as it looks beyond its established CAMON, SPARK and POVA smartphone families.

A 4.9mm Modular Smartphone

The TECNO Modular Phone is perhaps the more significant of the two concepts for smartphone users.

At 4.9mm thick, TECNO describes it as the world’s thinnest modular smartphone. The device uses proprietary Modular Magnetic Interconnection Technology, combining a precision magnetic array with pogo-pin connectors to allow different modules to be attached to the handset.

The company says the system supports an ecosystem of 10 high-performance modules, designed to expand the phone’s functionality according to users’ needs.

The host device retains a 3,000mAh to 4,000mAh battery, while attached modules can draw power directly from the phone, creating what TECNO describes as a snap-and-go experience.

The design also eliminates conventional ports through a unibody construction while offering dust and water resistance.

For Kenyan buyers, however, the immediate question is availability.

TECNO says the Modular Phone is expected to enter mass production, but it is not yet a conventional retail product. That means consumers should view the device primarily as a demonstration of the company’s technology direction rather than an immediate alternative to existing CAMON, SPARK or POVA models.

The phone has already attracted recognition beyond IFA, with TECNO saying it has received more than 20 accolades from international technology and design publications. It was also recognised at MWC 2026 by publications including CNET, Yanko Design and The Verge.

A Gaming PC Built for Small Spaces

The second award went to the Tonino Lamborghini TECNO TAURUS (MEGA MINI G1 Pro), a compact gaming PC that combines high-performance computing with the Italian brand’s distinctive design language.

Measuring about 6.36 litres, the machine incorporates a water-cooling system within a compact vertical chassis featuring a panoramic transparent window.

Under the hood, the system is powered by an Intel Core i9-13900HK processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 graphics, with support for DLSS 4.

TECNO says the system delivers up to 614 AI TOPS and a 145W total graphics power, positioning it not only as a gaming machine but also as a compact workstation for AI-intensive workloads.

Connectivity includes 15 ports, including OCuLink and USB4, alongside Wi-Fi 6E.

The product also previously received a design award from Yanko Design at MWC 2026.

What Kenyan Buyers Should Watch

The two IFA awards highlight a broader shift in TECNO’s product strategy towards thinner hardware, modularity, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

The company’s other IFA concepts included a Next Gen Bezelless Concept Phone, featuring what TECNO describes as a 0mm screen bezel, and the convertible MEGABOOK T15 360 Pro laptop.

Neither concept should be confused with products currently available through Kenyan retail channels.

Their relevance lies in what they reveal about future product development. Technology demonstrated first in concept devices can eventually influence features, materials and design approaches used in mainstream consumer products.

For Kenyan consumers who regularly upgrade their smartphones and laptops, the developments offer an early look at technologies that could eventually move from the concept stage into more accessible devices.

For now, the IFA awards strengthen TECNO’s position as a brand experimenting with new approaches to smartphone design and personal computing, while the bigger test will be how quickly — and at what price — these innovations make their way into products available to Kenyan buyers.
