Safaricom Accelerates Home Connectivity with Fibre Speed Boost

Safaricom has upgraded its Home Fibre service, increasing speeds by up to 2.5 times at no additional cost, in a strategic move aimed at strengthening customer retention as demand for reliable home internet continues to grow across Kenya.

The upgrade applies to all existing packages, with users retaining their current monthly prices. Entry-level plans now offer up to 15 Mbps, mid-tier packages have been increased to 35 Mbps and 80 Mbps, while premium users will receive speeds of up to 400 Mbps, targeting high-usage households.

The move comes as home broadband usage becomes more embedded in daily life, driven by remote work, streaming, online learning, and growing reliance on multiple connected devices per household. This has shifted competition among providers toward speed and consistency rather than access alone.

“As homes become increasingly connected, reliable high-speed internet is no longer a luxury but an essential service for modern living,” said Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa. “By upgrading Home Fibre speeds, we are delivering greater value to our customers, strengthening our market leadership, and laying the foundation for smarter, more connected homes and communities across Kenya.”

He noted that the upgrade is intended to improve user experience in multi-device households, where demand for bandwidth is rising and service stability has become a key expectation.

Safaricom, which says it now connects more than 800,000 homes, continues to expand its fibre network as it seeks to consolidate its position in Kenya’s fixed broadband market.

Industry competition in the segment has been intensifying, with operators increasingly using speed upgrades and value-added packages to reduce customer churn and attract new subscribers in a market where switching costs are relatively low.

The upgrade also reflects broader sector trends, as telecom operators respond to increasing data consumption driven by cloud services, streaming platforms, and smart home technologies.

Safaricom says the enhancement is part of its wider strategy to position Home Fibre as a long-term connectivity solution for households, aligning with Kenya’s growing dependence on digital services for work, education, and entertainment.
