Eldoret Gets LPG Gasfil Station as Motorists Seek Cheaper Fuel Options

A new LPG fuelling Station (Autogas) has opened in Eldoret, adding to Kenya’s limited but growing infrastructure for alternative transport fuels as motorists grapple with high fuel prices and pressure to cut emissions.

The station, established through a partnership between Oryx Energies and Gasfil Kenya, targets private motorists and commercial transport operators who are increasingly converting vehicles from petrol to liquefied petroleum gas in search of lower running costs.

“Decarbonisation is often framed as a Nairobi issue, but cities like Eldoret are where transport growth is happening fastest. This station is our flagship AutoGas site and marks the beginning of a wider expansion into cleaner fuels,” said Oryx Energies East Africa regional manager James Ngugi.

Eldoret’s selection reflects its role as a key logistics and agricultural centre in western Kenya, where demand for commercial transport is high and fuel costs account for a significant share of operating expenses. The town is emerging as a testing ground for cleaner transport options outside Nairobi.

AutoGas, which is LPG adapted for vehicle use, emits less carbon than petrol and diesel and is viewed as a transitional fuel in markets where electric vehicles remain expensive and charging infrastructure limited. Industry estimates show that operators who switch to LPG can cut fuel costs by about 30 to 40 per cent, depending on usage patterns and conversion costs.

The expansion of AutoGas infrastructure is also creating new business activity around vehicle conversions, maintenance and safety inspections, supporting a small but growing segment of specialised skills within the transport sector.

As Kenya weighs different pathways to decarbonise transport, the Eldoret AutoGas station highlights a cost-driven shift toward lower-emission fuels, particularly in fast-growing towns where economic considerations often outweigh long-term environmental targets.

“Eldoret is a transit city, and transport operators here are very sensitive to fuel costs. AutoGas offers immediate savings while also reducing emissions, which makes it practical for daily commercial use,” said Gasfill Managing Director James Macharia.
