APA Microinsurance, in partnership with VisionFund Kenya, the financial empowerment and livelihoods subsidiary of World Vision International, and IBISA, a leading global climate Insurtech have introduced ClimaCash+ and AfyaCash, two innovative, inclusive insurance solutions designed to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME), urban & rural communities and households to bounce back quickly from illness and climate-related risks.
APA Microinsurance and VisionFund have co-created impactful insurance solutions that empower MSME, urban & rural communities and households with coverage that is accessible, relevant, and sustainable.
Through this partnership, AfyaCash, a hospital cash benefit product commenced in 2024, provides policyholders with a daily cash payout during hospitalization.
The solution has already made a significant difference, benefiting over 25,000 beneficiaries across Kenya. AfyaCash is seamlessly integrated into all loans disbursed through VisionFund, ensuring that every borrower receives essential financial protection during times of medical need.
Building on this success, the partnership has now expanded to include IBISA, introducing ClimaCash+, a first-of-its-kind parametric solution within APA’s portfolio.
ClimaCash+ offers rapid financial protection against weather-related risks such as drought, excessive rainfall, heat, and floods, with payouts automatically triggered by specific weather conditions.
This ensures that households, farmers, and small businesses receive prompt support when climate-related disasters strikes, helping them recover quickly and rebuild with resilience.
Currently, ClimaCash+ is triggered by rainfall data, as tested during the pilot phase which commenced in March 2025. This pilot has already reached over 1,500 policyholders across five regions, Eldoret, Nyeri, Nyahururu, Narok, and Nyandarua.
In the next phase, additional weather triggers such as drought, excessive heat, and flooding will be introduced and tested in the next phases of development.
The partners are now preparing to scale the solution nationwide, extending its protection to thousands more Kenyan households and entrepreneurs whose livelihoods depend on agriculture and micro-enterprises.
Speaking at the launch, Joseph Ogutu, Chairman of APA Microinsurance, stated: “Our partnership with VisionFund and IBISA is built on a shared vision to co-create innovative, practical, and scalable solutions that address real-world challenges head-on. AfyaCash has already demonstrated the transformative power of inclusive insurance in changing lives.”
