Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has condemned Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over remarks he made suggesting that Raila Odinga’s death was an act of God meant to benefit the Kikuyu community.
In a fiery statement, Ngilu described Kahiga’s comments as “grossly despicable, reckless, and an unwarranted attack on a grieving family and a community still reeling from a monumental loss.”
“The statements attributed to Governor Mutahi Kahiga are grossly despicable, reckless and an unwarranted attack on a grieving family and a community that is still reeling from a monumental loss,” Ngilu said.
“Kahiga MUST UNRESERVEDLY APOLOGIZE for his unbridled bigotry. Shame on you Kahiga,” she added.
Her reaction followed the circulation of a viral video in which Governor Kahiga is heard making controversial remarks linking Raila Odinga’s death to divine intervention.
In the video, Kahiga reportedly said: “God killed Raila for Kikuyus to survive. Development was being taken to Nyanza to please him, but God does not eat ugali and does not live in Kayole. God took Raila for Kikuyus to survive and benefit.”
The comments have sparked nationwide outrage, with many leaders and citizens calling them insensitive and divisive at a time when the country is mourning the loss of the long-serving opposition leader and former Prime Minister.
Ngilu urged national leaders to promote unity and empathy, saying that Kenya must rise above tribal politics, especially in moments of grief.
“We must not allow hate speech and ethnic arrogance to define our nation’s politics,” she said.
Governor Kahiga has not yet issued a public apology or clarified his remarks.
