Wang’uru Stadium Bursts to Life as Mary Maingi Super Cup Season 2 Champions Crowned MWEA, KIRINYAGA COUNTY – June 9, 2025

Wang’uru International Stadium was a hive of celebration on Sunday as Season 2 of the Hon. Mary Maingi Super Cup Football Tournament came to a thrilling close, marking a major milestone in grassroots sports in Mwea Constituency.

The tournament, which featured 90 teams from across the region, drew thousands of fans, community leaders, and entertainers for a day filled with competitive football, cultural showcases, and messages of unity and youth empowerment.

The finals were tightly contested, with Kiriko edging past Kinyaga 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to claim the men’s title.

In the women’s category, Kutus Queens triumphed over Mukou Queens 5-4 on penalties following another 1-1 draw.

Ndorome secured third place in the men’s division with a 2-0 victory over Murubara.Winners walked away with cash prizes, accolades, and the pride of being part of Mwea’s fast-growing sports legacy.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, Mwea MP Hon. Mary Maingi celebrated the event’s success and praised the youth for their discipline, teamwork, and determination.

“Season 2 of this tournament has shown us what is possible when we invest in our young people,” said Hon. Maingi. “Football has brought us together — it has shown us that unity, peace, and hard work can shape a better Mwea.”

She encouraged young people to stay focused and avoid divisive politics, stressing that their energy and creativity are essential to Mwea’s development.

Hon. Maingi also thanked President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and the Kirinyaga County leadership for their support in making the tournament a success.“We are just getting started.

The Mary Maingi Football Tournament is here to stay. Mwea’s talent is limitless, and we will keep creating platforms to showcase it,” she added, hinting at a more expansive Season 3.

Adding to the day’s excitement were musical performances from celebrated artists Wadagliz, known for their hit Anguka Nayo, and Mugithi star Joyce Wa Mama.

Mwea East Deputy County Commissioner Fred Ayieko, who also attended the event, highlighted the role of sports in tackling drug abuse and empowering youth, reaffirming the government’s commitment to youth-centered initiatives.
