Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has issued a stern rebuke to the Controller of Budget, accusing the office of defying a court order that mandated the immediate release of bursary funds intended for thousands of students across Murang’a County.
Speaking earlier today, Governor Kang’ata described the failure to release the funds as contempt of court, warning that it threatens the education of many pupils who rely on bursary support—particularly with schools set to reopen tomorrow.
“This blatant disregard for a court directive is not only a grave injustice to our children but a dangerous attack on devolution itself,” Kang’ata declared.
He referenced a ruling from the Nakuru Law Courts in petition E012 of 2024, filed by Laban Omusundi and the Katiba Institute against ten respondents, including the Cabinet Secretary for Treasury, Controller of Budget, Council of Governors, and Senate.
The court had ordered the immediate disbursement of funds, yet the Controller of Budget has allegedly failed to comply.
Governor Kang’ata vowed to explore all legal options to ensure Murang’a students receive the support they are entitled to, warning that continued noncompliance would escalate the crisis facing county governments.
“Devolution is under siege. If we do not act decisively, we risk not only the future of our counties but also the future of our children,” he said.
The County Government of Murang’a is calling for urgent intervention to uphold constitutional gains made through devolution and to safeguard the educational aspirations of the next generation.
