The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has urged filmmakers to focus on creating clean, family-friendly content to maximize monetization opportunities.

Speaking at the Creatives in Arts and Film Literacy Programme (CAFIL) forum in Kirinyaga County, KFCB Acting CEO Mr. Paskal Opiyo emphasized that audio-visual content rated General Exhibition (GE) and Parental Guidance (PG) reaches a broader audience and has greater commercial potential.

“The current Box Office top movies of 2024 are either rated GE or PG, which proves that clean content appeals to larger audiences and is easier to monetize,” Mr. Opiyo stated.

He encouraged creatives to produce content that aligns with Kenya’s cultural values, moral principles, and national aspirations.

“Our appeal is for creatives to produce content that conforms to Kenya’s culture, moral values, and National aspirations. KFCB is committed to ensuring a facilitative regulatory environment for local filmmakers and content creators to monetize their works and create jobs,” he added.

Mr. Opiyo reaffirmed the Board’s dedication to supporting the creative sector through initiatives such as CAFIL, which empower filmmakers with critical information and resources in collaboration with other government agencies.

“Through CAFIL, we aim to spur growth in the industry by offering filmmakers the tools and knowledge they need to succeed,” he noted.

Dismissing claims that the KFCB stifles creativity, Mr. Opiyo clarified that content regulation is not intended to infringe on creative rights but to ensure responsible content consumption, especially for minors.

Highlighting the government’s broader economic agenda, Mr. Opiyo said the KFCB’s programs are anchored in the Fifth Pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which focuses on job creation and economic growth within the creative sector.

He urged filmmakers and creatives to take advantage of government-backed initiatives aimed at nurturing, showcasing, and monetizing their talents, noting that the creative economy plays a crucial role in wealth creation and youth empowerment.

The CAFIL forum, an ongoing initiative by KFCB, continues to offer filmmakers opportunities to network, access resources, and align their work with industry standards for sustainable success.
