The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), in collaboration with various government agencies, has unveiled the Regulators’ Handbook for Film Practitioners in Kenya. This comprehensive guide consolidates simplified regulatory information aimed at empowering local creatives and streamlining the film industry’s operations.
Speaking at an engagement forum held at Semara Hotel in Machakos County, KFCB Acting CEO Mr. Paskal Opiyo encouraged creatives to utilize the handbook as a valuable resource in advancing their artistic endeavors. He reiterated KFCB’s commitment to fostering a conducive regulatory environment to support the growth of the film sector through partnerships with industry stakeholders.
The handbook provides detailed information on regulations governing the creation, distribution, exhibition, broadcasting, and possession of audio-visual content. It also offers guidelines on the use of drones in filmmaking, immigration requirements for foreign filmmakers, and procedures for filming in game parks and sanctuaries. Additionally, it highlights tax obligations and incentives available to film practitioners, copyright laws to protect filmmakers’ intellectual property, and data protection requirements.
Developed in partnership with agencies such as the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Immigration Department, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), and Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO), the handbook is a testament to KFCB’s resolve to enhance the film industry. It aims to provide clear and accessible regulatory guidance, enabling local and international creatives to thrive in Kenya’s dynamic film landscape.
