The Vice Chancellor of the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), Professor Leila Abubakar, has praised the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) for its efforts in empowering filmmakers and content creators through the Creatives in Arts and Film Literacy Program (CAFIL).

Speaking during the CAFIL forum held at the university on Thursday, September 26, 2024, Professor Abubakar emphasized the importance of supporting the creative industry in contributing to Kenya’s socio-economic development.

“We thank the KFCB and the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund (SASDF) for initiating the CAFIL program that is focused on helping creatives to showcase and monetize their talents,” said Professor Abubakar.

She highlighted that empowering creatives is crucial to fostering the growth of the creative economy, which plays a significant role in Kenya’s overall development. According to the Vice Chancellor, the creative arts sector holds immense potential for job creation and economic growth, and initiatives like CAFIL provide a platform for artists to thrive.

Professor Abubakar also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the KFCB and other industry stakeholders in the development of the Regulators’ Handbook for Film Practitioners in Kenya, which provides essential guidelines for filmmakers. She stressed the importance of such resources in promoting professionalism and fostering the growth of the sector.

“The role of creative arts in the economy cannot be underrated,” she added, calling on stakeholders to continue working together to boost the industry.

The CAFIL forum at TUM brought together filmmakers, students, and key players in the creative industry, offering an opportunity for engagement, learning, and networking. The initiative is part of a broader effort to empower Kenya’s content creators by providing them with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in the global film industry.
