Muranga food security, Last Mile Connectivity Receive Sh900M boost

Close to 18,000 residents in the Maragua area of Muranga County are set to benefit from the KES 900 Million Maragua Water Supply and Irrigation project.

President William Ruto, who launched the project, said that the Maragua Water Supply and Irrigation project will address the water and irrigation needs of over 18,000 people in Maragua, adding that the Government will allocate KES 180 Million for the last-mile connectivity, ensuring residents have access to both clean drinking water and irrigation for their crops.

The project aligns with the Government’s ambitious Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (Beta), aimed at achieving heightened food security. At the same time, the project aims to enhance food security and reduce reliance on costly food imports, which currently drain KES 500 billion from the national budget annually.

The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation.

Phase I focuses on providing clean drinking water for over 18,000 residents. The existing Maragua Dam currently supplies 15,000 cubic meters of water per day, with 8,000 cubic meters allocated for domestic use under this phase. This investment aims to address water scarcity and improve health outcomes in the region.

Phase II will further bolster food security by dedicating 7,000 cubic meters of water per day to irrigation, reducing reliance on costly food imports that currently drain KES 500 billion from the national budget annually.
