Operations of Modern Coast Express Limited have been halted following a grisly road accident that claimed 33 lives yesterday evening.

The bus belonging to the Modern Coast services lost control plunging into the river along the Meru – Mombasa highway.

NTSA said in a statement that all the 31 buses belonging to the company which are operating across the country have been halted pending investigations.

“A thorough multi agency investigation into the crash and an evaluation of the operators safety operational standards is currently underway,” NTSA director General George Njao said in the statement.

Eyewitnesses said that the Mombasa-bound bus was travelling from Meru Town when the accident occurred.

Kenya Red Cross on Sunday was able to rescue some of the victims, who were rushed to the hospital.

The accident occurred at around 6 pm.

The injured have been rushed to Chuka County Referral Hospital and PCEA Chogoria Mission Hospital.
